The Importance of Volunteering

I always knew from a young age that helping others made me feel accomplished, to say the least. I loved seeing one’s reaction when I would take time out of my schedule to put them first. Recently, I have been interning for Josh Gottheimer who is a democratic representative for the state of New Jersey. From phone banking to delivering two hundred yard signs, I have learned so much about the importance of volunteering.

On a political spectrum, volunteers are heavily relied on. It wasn’t until this past year when I started interning for Josh Gottheimer and occasionally phone banking for former NASA astronaut, Mark Kelly who is running for the United States Senate that I realized how critical it is for individuals to volunteer. Just from my few months of experience working with different campaigns, I truly believe that if it weren’t for determined volunteers, political campaigns would not be able to survive. When it comes to political organizations, charities, not-for-profit organizations, and so many other institutions, we need all hands on deck. Just take a moment and think about what it takes to get “your message” out there, recruit new supporters, gather donations, and even win a congressional primary election. None of that would be possible without the selfless individuals who help out.

The title of this piece, “The Importance of Volunteering”, is quite timely and relevant to the pivotal moment in history society is currently facing. “One who freely offers to do something” is the formal definition of a “volunteer” so with that said, even if you cannot get yourself out there to deliver two hundred yard signs, donate personal protective equipment to hospitals in need, offer water bottles to peaceful protesters, or even provide medical assistance to those who have been tear-gassed and shot at with rubber bullets, you can still help to spread awareness and provide the necessary resources to those who are eager to volunteer.
