smART Feminists Within the Art World/Creativity and Coronavirus

In the midst of the coronavirus, most art institiutions are temporarily closed to ensure social distancing; unfortunately, this means that individuals all around the world who want to experience the delight of art, cannot. While people are currently prohibited to go out, Sassy Girl Weekly is proud to virtually bring the art community to you!

The three pieces above are all done by women artists who declare themselves, feminists. The first image is displayed in the Drawings and Prints department at the MOMA in New York City. This piece was done by an artist by the name of Barbara Kruger who is best known for her black and white photographs that contain pops of red in them. Her work has also been mainstreamed by the well known streetwear brand called, Supreme. Specifically, this piece was used as the cover of Ms Magazine in 1992. The cover sheds light on how crucial it is for women to use their voice and never stop fighting for the rights they deserve.

The second image is a photograph of the Womanhouse organized by Judy Chicago and Miriam Schapiro. These two women organized the Feminist Art Program (FAP) at the California Institute for Arts in the 70s. They led 21 passionate students to renovate this house that was going to be demolished. Inside the house, they set up "site specific" art exhibits such as a women in an apron in a kitchen that was covered in fried eggs to display that women do not only belong cooking and cleaning. The Womanhouse gave a new perspective to all women showing them that being a wife and mother did not define the type of individual they needed to be.

The last visual is a photograph but some may call it a self portrait. This is a picture of Cindy Sherman, done by Cindy Sherman. Sherman liked to photograph herself in a variety of clothing that brought attention to the stereotypes of women in the media. There are many different factors about this artist that screams "feminism" but one of which is the fact that she is calling awareness to her own body. She is demonstrating confidence as well as teaching women a lesson to not pay any mind to anyone that may diminish one's self pride.

Feminism comes in several different forms and art is just one of them. A feminist that I hold so dear to my heart and look up to recently stated, "Everyone needs a little beauty in their life when everything seems so bleak". The owner to those words is my mother and she cannot be more correct. During this time of crisis and panic, it is important to remember that we are all in this together and art can provide that little glimmer everyone needs so badly right now.
