RBG: A Loss for the Nation... but Maybe There is Hope

The loss of Ruth Bader Ginsburg not only has me beyond devastated, but it also has me tremendously worried about the future of the United States. As a female, I am terrified. As a Jew, I am mourning. As a human being, I am scared. As an American, I am ready to fight and make change.

While I have previously written about RBG and her outstanding accomplishments, no words can truly define the hero she was for our country. RBG continuously delivered progressive votes on the most controversial issues of our time, including same-sex marriage, voting rights, immigration, health care, and affirmative action. She preserved the right to an abortion for all women, with her now gone, that right is more at risk than it has ever been before.

Touching more on the topic of abortion, RBG worked endlessly to ensure no “direct assault” on Roe v Wade, which later established abortion rights in America. Since Donald Trump has taken office, he has appointed two pro-life justices to the Supreme Court, Neil Gorsuch in 2017 and Brett Kavanaugh in 2018. These two justices have made their opinion on abortions very clear… they do not support getting an abortion even though neither one of them has a uterus… ironic right? With that said, it would be no surprise if Donald Trump appointed yet another uber-conservative, pro-life, and misogynistic justice to the Supreme Court before his first term comes to a close. In order for Trump to appoint a new justice to the Supreme Court, the United States Senate must first confirm the appointment by what is called, straight majority vote. Current senate leader, Mitch McConnell has said he would confirm a new justice before the 2020 presidential election but he is working with a slim 53-47 majority which can hopefully prevent a new conservative justice from being appointed, thus ensuring Americans the right to an abortion as well as the right to same-sex marriage, voting, immigration, health care, and so many other liberal causes RBG fought for.

Ginsburg was the first Jewish female on the Supreme Court. She was so passionate about “Judaism’s concern for justice” as well as guaranteeing rights to Jews all over America. She made an impact on the way of life for Jews in the United States. According to Jewish tradition, an individual who passes on Rosh Hashanah, which is when RBG passed, is an individual of great righteousness. RBG is exactly that and we must honor her by electing Joe Biden and Kamala Harris on November 3rd. We need an administration who can and will carry on her legacy. While RBG was the glue that was holding our Supreme Court together, there are more justices, politicians, and legislators who can do the same and fix our country.

This is not only a loss for the Supreme Court, her family, young females around the country, but this is a loss for the nation. We need to do everything we can to prevent a new justice from being appointed by Trump, but most importantly we must prevent Trump from winning the 2020 presidential election. Do not underestimate yourself. Call any U.S. senator and urge them to not vote to confirm the new justice appointment. Send emails. Donate what you can. I have hope in the phrase “second times a charm” so please believe in it too. We will make Ruth Bader Ginsburg so proud. We can do this. We must do this. We will do this.
