Podcasts: When You Want to Laugh vs When You Want to Learn

Before Sassy Girl Weekly’s birth, I played with the idea of starting a podcast. Although my podcast idea was not politically focused, I intended for politics, feminism, and social issues to be a recurring theme in my episodes. I wanted to title the podcast “What Should We Talk About?” because I, and many others, struggle with conversations at times. My plan was to converse with a new individual each episode, the first episode being with my mom. I would have opened each episode with the same question: “so [guest’s name], what should we talk about?” which, in my opinion, would have led to an organic, on-the-spot conversation which is typically unintentionally hilarious. The farthest I got with my podcast was naming it, creating the cover art, and deciding who my first guest would be. Despite not following through, I channeled all of my energy and motivation into this publication, and I couldn’t be happier with my decision to do so.

I’ve always been interested in podcasts, as I did want to start my own, but I am more interested in what they, as a whole, offer society. Why are they attractive? What makes a good podcast? Do people really listen to them? In the past year and a half, I’ve listened to several podcasts on various topics and feel more informed about their purpose.

I feel that podcasts fall into two main categories: comedy and education. Of course, there is intersectionality between those two categories and many other genres of podcasts, but when in the mood for a podcast, I find myself asking whether I want to laugh or learn. There is no doubt that the world of podcasts can be overwhelming, so as an experienced listener I’d like to highlight some of my favorites.

Podcasts for Laughing:

SmartLess hosted by Will Arnett, Sean Hayes, and Jason Bateman

  • This podcast is relatively new to me, but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed each episode I’ve listened to thus far. Each episode begins with one of the hosts revealing a mystery guest to the other two hosts, culminating in a series of hysterically funny discussions between the hosts and guest. There is a heartwarming balance of comedy, friendship, and unity in each episode, leaving you with great vibes and a positive mindset.

WTF with Marc Maron

  • This podcast was one of the first podcasts I ever listened to and it is also the first podcast I ever laughed (out loud) at. Comedian Marc Maron knows how to have a conversation, and I mean a very, very good conversation. These episodes will keep you engaged and entertained thanks to the wit of Maron and the randomness of certain topics discussed, like the discussion of cornbread between Maron and Rachel Maddow. You’ll be left feeling as if you were in Maron’s garage, the recording location, with him and his guest as they crack jokes and unapologetically expose themselves.

Lovett or Leave It hosted by Jon Lovett

  • Although this podcast is politically centered, Lovett and his panel of comedians, actors, journalists, and other really cool people will make you giggle as they make fun of our country’s political nightmare. Each episode features a series of games/quizzes that the panel members participate in, but don’t be surprised if you start playing along as well. This podcast leaves you feeling grateful to be a liberal, and it also leaves a smile on your face.

Hysteria hosted by Erin Ryan and Alyssa Mastromonaco

  • This female-only podcast is highly relatable and will make your stomach hurt from laughing too hard. In each episode, Erin and Alyssa are accompanied by a panel of opinionated women from all around the country to discuss everything from reality television to reproductive rights. These unbelievably talented and successful women bring to light numerous important issues plaguing our society and never fail to underline the importance of having women in positions of power. This podcast is sure to educate, entertain, and encourage you.

Podcasts for Learning:

The Daily hosted by Michael Barbaro and powered by New York Times journalism

  • If you’re looking to learn, listen to The Daily. This podcast is hosted by political journalist Michael Barbaro from The New York Times where he interviews some of the best journalists in the world. They tell the biggest stories of the time, leaving you feeling well informed and trustful that you’re digesting nothing but facts.

Pod Save America hosted by Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, Dan Pfeiffer, and Tommy Vietor

  • These former aides to Barack Obama are joined by journalists, politicians, activists, and more for a straightforward discussion about politics and the week’s news. They cut to the chase on relevant matters and make it glaringly obvious what is important and what isn’t. While not every topic discussed is all “sunshine and rainbows,” it’s always comforting hearing the interesting perspectives these highly qualified men bring to the table. Even when talking about the worst of events, like the war in Afghanistan, climate change, or simply politics, you’ll be left knowing how to help and feeling hopeful for what’s to come.

What A Day hosted by Gideon Resnick, Josie Duffy Rice, Tre’vell Anderson, and Priyanka Aribindi

  • Described as “what “Fox & Friends” would sound like if it were hosted by people whose parents read to them as children,” this podcast covers the breaking news of today’s society. Acknowledging that today’s news is filled with “chaos and crime,” these hosts candidly catch you up on stories you may have missed. With three individuals of color co-hosting the podcast, you’re guaranteed to hear insightful and meaningful points of view, leaving you feeling enlightened and exposed to new perspectives.

We Can Do Hard Things hosted by Glennon Doyle

  • This podcast is a nice change of pace from your typical politically centered podcast. In these episodes, Author Glennon Doyle, married to soccer star Abby Wambach, and her sister Amanda discuss a new “hard thing” each episode. Through conversation and personal experience, they teach you how to approach the hardest of things, such as body image, self-care, and addiction, and become survivors of your challenges. Each episode leaves you feeling prepared to be the best version of yourself and confident that you can do hard things.

I encourage you all to check these podcasts out; you will not regret it. Let me know your thoughts, criticisms, or podcast suggestions at @SassyGirlWeekly on Twitter. Enjoy listening!
