Literature for the Lady: March

Kick ass women write kick ass literature!

The month of March represents change. While the seasons are changing from winter to spring, women are also changing their outlook on life and their purpose in society. We are growing every day and these books capture the strength, perseverance, and potential of women of all ages and races.

I am so thankful to have been gifted Rad American Women A-Z at such a young age because I have learned how important it is to be a confident adolescent. Young girls all around the world are growing up, thinking it is "normal" to be treated poorly by boys and men. The New York Times-Bestselling team behind the Rad American Women series are responsible for teaching young girls to stand their ground. This book illustrates influential feminists for each letter of the alphabet. This children's book makes for an awesome gift and will teach any girl how to be a sassy girl.

The next book was just released one week ago. Although I have yet to read Pretty Bitches, the description of the book sounded very relatable. Because I was young and standing up for women's rights, I was labeled crazy and sassy. This book contains personal memoirs from multiple women's rights activists. They talk about issues regarding women ranging from the workplace right to the voting booth. This book is a great option for anyone seeking insight on how women are portrayed and talked about in this society.

Maya Angelou is the definition of strength. She is very well known for her critically acclaimed memoir called I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. This was the first non fiction best seller written by an African American woman which is absolutely remarkable. Maya Angelou was tragically raped by her mother's boyfriend at the age of 7 years old. Due to her traumatic experiences, she stopped speaking and lived as a mute for several years. Angelou has endured so much more; she has written about her life experiences in I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. This coming of age story allows the reader to get a sense of the racial and gender inequality that the innocent Maya Angelou suffered.

I hope each and every one of you get a chance to read and enjoy these inspiring books.
