Joe Biden x Kamala Harris: What Does This Mean for Us?

After waiting months for the Democratic nominee, Joe Biden, to announce his running mate, the world finally knows who she is. Kamala Harris, the highly qualified woman of color who is ready to take down Donald Trump and Mike Pence. But what does this mean for the United States of America?

Well, Kamala Harris is the daughter of two immigrants. She is the first Black woman to have been elected district attorney in California history, the first woman to be California’s attorney general, and the first Indian American senator. Harris is also now the first Black woman to be on a presidential ticket. In case you’re confused (which you’re probably not) Kamala Harris has paved the way for women of color in America. I want to emphasize the fact that Kamala is just 55 years old and has achieved a lifetime’s worth of success; if she accomplished all of that in just 55 years, imagine what she can do for this country in 4.

Both Biden and Harris outlined what they will focus on throughout the general election: Trump’s deficiencies, the empowerment of women, climate change, and the defense of protestors who have recently flooded the streets of America. In other speeches given by Biden and Harris, they mentioned supporting the middle class and immigration, acting upon racial unrest, America’s broken economy, and of course, the pandemic. Biden mentioned that young girls of color may often feel overlooked and undervalued in this country, but now that Kamala is the Vice Presidential nominee, for the first time they may see themselves in a different way.

Elaborating on Biden’s statement, Joe and Kamala can potentially change our society. They will set new values for the people of this country. Unlike the current administration, they will embrace all sexualities, races, ethnicities, genders, and ages. They plan to improve our economy, improve the health of our people by correctly handling the pandemic, and improve the current state of our nation by promoting peace and love as opposed to bigotry, racism, misogyny, and hate. Thanks to Trump, you can’t even scroll through Twitter right now without seeing people fighting about whether or not the Black Lives Matter movement is a “symbol of hate”. Even back in 1991 Trump told the former president of Trump Plaza Hotel & Casino, John O’Donnell, "'Laziness is a trait in Blacks. It really is, I believe that."’ Sure, if Biden and Harris win the election racism won’t instantly be solved but at least our elected officials will not be making outright racist comments. For Christ’s sake, Kamala Harris is a woman of color and Joe Biden is determined to protect and further develop Obamacare which covers and offers healthcare to 3 million uninsured, non-elderly Black Americans (this is just one of several tasks Biden plans on implementing to help the Black community). On the other hand, Donald Trump claims “to have done more for the Black community than any other president” when in reality, he just makes racist comments about them. If you have any doubt about Biden or Harris, don’t because they are both extremely experienced and have a game plan on how to better our country which in turn will better us as human beings.
