Feminists of the Month: November

Believe it or not, the state of Georgia has not always been categorized as a “swing state.” The term swing state, also known as a battleground state, essentially means that it can be reasonably won by either the Democratic party or the Republican party by a “swing” in votes, meaning the results will be extremely close. Georgia has voted red in the past 6 presidential elections. Due to Georgia’s voting history, it was safe to say that it was not a “safe state.” That all changed during the 2020 presidential election. Joe Biden took the lead in Georgia by just 12,670 votes… see what I mean when I say “swing”? For the first time since 1992 Democrats had won the state of Georgia during a presidential election, only making it a swing state until now. “But how did Georgia flip blue after a steady conservative voting history?” you might ask. Well, I wish the answer to that question was that Trump supporters finally came to their senses and decided to “settle for Biden.” Unfortunately, however, that isn’t the actual answer. The truth is that there was a significant increase in voter turnout. You might now be asking yourself how that happened and the answer is just two words. Stacey. Abrams.

The former Georgia Representative and her foundation, Fair Fight, are largely responsible for the Democratic win in Georgia. Stacey Abrams founded Fair Fight in 2018 to promote elections in Georgia, increase voter turnout, educate voters, and most importantly, fight back against the harsh reality of voter suppression. Specifically, Abrams and her team worked for years and years to register hundreds of thousands of Georgians to secure the win for Joe Biden and other Democratic candidates, but their work is far from finished. With the Georgia Senate races headed for a runoff, Fair Fight is getting ready to get the vote out for both Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock. Fair Fight has already raised over $6 million dollars to help Ossoff and Warnock win and they aren’t stopping there. Sadly, Black, Indigenous, people of color (BIPOC) are disproportionately affected by voter suppression and a very significant percentage of Georgians are Black, African American, Hispanic, Native American, or simply non-White. With that fact at hand, Fair Fight has worked endlessly to ensure that BIPOC feel comfortable, safe, and heard during the voting process. They have targeted college students through their Zoom webinars. They have even shown up at college graduations to register young voters. Whatever it may be, Stacey Abrams and her army of volunteers at Fair Fight are there.

If that all wasn’t impressive enough, Stacey Abrams was the first black female nominee for Governor of Georgia and received more votes than any other Democrat in the state’s history. Alongside that, she was also the first black female and Georgian to deliver a speech at the State of the Union. Without a doubt, Stacey Abrams is a role model for all young women around the world. She is limitless. She effectively empowers voters and truly embodies the phrase “empowered women empower women.”
