Feminists of the Month: May

The United States Supreme Court currently has nine justices and three of those justices are women. It is important that the Supreme Court justices are of all ages, genders, religions, sexualities, races, and ethnicities because they are responsible for ensuring the American people “the promise of equal justice under law”. The Supreme Court rules on cases that can potentially affect our everyday lives which is why it is imperative to have motivated, outspoken, and inspiring justices just like Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg is commonly referred to as “RBG” or “The Notorious RBG” which is a reference to the late rapper, Biggie Smalls, or The Notorious B.I.G. In the Trump era, feminism is more important than ever; feminists are livid, passionate, and determined to reach gender equality. RBG is often compared to The Notorious B.I.G because his music was “gangsta” and dealt with anger and RBG resembles those qualities as she stands before the United States Supreme Court.

RBG’s first oral argument in front of the Supreme Court was dealing with unequal spousal benefits for women. From there on out, RBG changed the game and made it apparent that preventing women from participating in the same activities and occupations as men weren't “protecting” women but instead, it was hurting them. It is thanks to Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the devotion she put toward her career, that the path for women in the United States has drastically changed.

RBG is 87 and has been treated for cancer four different times in the span of two decades. When RBG was being treated for colon cancer, she did not miss one day on the Supreme Court bench. She was recently hospitalized due to a “benign gallbladder infection”; however, Ginsburg was still active from the hospital via teleconference for the oral arguments. Despite the health conditions RBG has endured over her 87 years of life, no force can stop her. Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a role model and countless life lessons can be absorbed from her remarkable journey.
