Feminists of the Month: August

Being a feminist means mastering the skill of responding to hate; specifically misogyny. Recently, nobody has done this better than the young Latina Representative for New York's 14th congressional district, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

On Monday, July 20th AOC was walking up the steps of the Capitol, headed to cast a vote when Ted Yoho, a fellow Representative from Florida, called her a “f*cking b*tch”. According to AOC “he kept escalating the conversation” so she walked away. While AOC may have ended that encounter by fleeing the situation, she was only just getting started. It was Thursday, July 23rd when AOC took to the House floor to tear apart Ted Yoho. In her 10 minute speech, she so powerfully relayed the message of “never take sh*t from men that continually use ‘dehumanizing’ language towards women”. AOC also shed light on the fact that Yoho was using his female family members as a defense against his misogynistic behavior. AOC is the voice we need in the House of Representatives. She is a woman who recognizes the change that must be made and she is doing just that starting with the U.S. House of Reps.

Although AOC successfully clapped back at Ted Yoho, she has been dealing with men like Yoho for countless years. From Florida’s Governor, Ron DeSantis to the rude diners she had while working as a waitress, AOC stands her ground every single time.

AOC is of Puerto Rican descent and has experienced the problems with U.S. immigration policies for her entire life, which explains why she is so passionate about immigration reforms. She is a Democratic Socialist and shares similar views to Bernie Sanders; these include medical care for all, universal jobs, criminal justice reforms and so much more. She is the epitome of a hard worker. While AOC was studying economics and international relations at Boston University, she worked as a waitress and bartender to financially help her mother who worked as a house cleaner and bus driver.

At the age of just 29, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is the youngest woman to have ever been elected to Congress. She perfectly represents the feminist emergence our society is currently seeing and she is a wonderful role model for young females all around the world.
