As I sit here, reflecting on the past month, my mind races in a million different directions. With so many significant events having occurred over such a short period of time, it feels almost impossible to write about them all, which is why I encourage you to grab a cup of Joe and read several hot takes from SassyGirlZo, the CEO and Founder of Sassy Girl Weekly.
Starting off extra hot with the newly appointed Supreme Court Justice, Amy Coney Barrett… or as some say Amy Coney Island, Amy Crate and Barrel, or my personal favorite, Amy Coronavirus. From being partly responsible for causing a superspreader event to not knowing the freedoms of the first amendment, she has now filled the irreplaceable Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s Supreme Court seat. As a radical feminist, it is empowering to see females in positions of power, however, Amy Coney Barrett is a disgrace to feminism as a whole and a disgrace to feminists all over the country. Barrett’s views on abortion are no secret. She is a Devout Catholic who was taught that “abortion is always immoral.” On top of that, she has gained support from numerous pro-life organizations that advocate for the implementation of inhumane restrictions on abortion clinics such as Planned Parenthood. Barrett has stated that “she won’t let her beliefs affect her work as a judge” but she called for a state law that sought to ban abortions. On top of that, she does not support stricter gun laws, she wants to restrict immigration, and she does not support the Affordable Care Act. I do not stand for females tearing down other females, but I cannot support a woman who does not support other women, the LGBTQ+ community, and basic human rights.
Halloween has just passed, Thanksgiving is approaching fast, the holidays will be here before we know it, and New Year’s is right after that. This means large gatherings and a lack of social distancing which will result in an increase of COVID cases and most likely an increase in deaths. The United States has already seen a serious increase in cases since the pandemic first hit. On Wednesday, November 4th, a New York Times database revealed that there were more than 107,800 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the U.S. As of now, five states--Maine, Minnesota, Indiana, Nebraska, and Colorado--set single-day case records. On average, daily case reports in Minnesota have increased by 102% and have increased by 73% in Indiana. Cases in Maine have tripled and they have more than doubled in Iowa. Similarly to Indiana, Wyoming’s cases have also increased by 73%. The death toll is on the rise and hospitals all over the country are trying to prepare but they are fearful. This is deeply concerning considering we are in the middle of possibly the most important election in all of history. With mass riots, protests, and pure chaos related to the 2020 election, the U.S. is almost guaranteed to experience a second wave. Don’t be part of the problem; host a virtual Thanksgiving dinner, do your holiday shopping online and mail gifts to your loved ones, celebrate New Year’s with a virtual happy hour, and most importantly wear a mask, practice hand hygiene, and socially distance.
Finishing this piece with a bang, let’s talk about the 2020 presidential election. I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t checked the electoral college at least 4 times throughout the process of writing this. Currently, the world is waiting on Nevada to release their results which would make Joe Biden the president-elect of 2020. *Takes a deep breath*, that felt great to write. On election night, Fox News and the Associated Press called Arizona for Joe Biden which originally meant that Biden flipped Arizona. As of now, no other news stations have called Arizona for Biden so Americans continue to anxiously wait for the results. Biden has already flipped Michigan and Wisconsin and has won Washington, Oregon, California, New Mexico, Colorado, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Hawaii, New York, Virginia, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and District of Columbia, leaving Joe Biden with 264 electoral college votes and Donald Trump with 214 electoral college votes. Biden and Trump are currently tied in Georgia with it at 49.4% to 49.4%. With at least 159.8 million people having voted in this election, and over 69.5 million votes for Biden--the most any presidential candidate has ever received--this election is definitely historical. Thankfully, the Democrats will remain in control of the House of Representatives, however, it is unlikely that they will have control of the Senate. Although not having control of the Senate is quite disappointing, it only means that the next 4 years with Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in office will be more challenging than needed, but nothing will stop them from accomplishing the necessary. Other noteworthy races are the Senate races between Republican David Perdue and Democrat Jon Ossoff as well as Republican Incumbent Kelly Loeffler and Democrat Raphael Warnock happening in Georgia at the moment which are predicted to go into a runoff in January of 2021. On a more local scale, Sarah McBride, a transgender politician, is the first out LGBTQ+ individual to be elected to Delaware’s state legislature. Arizona and New Jersey have legalized recreational marijuana while South Dakota has approved both recreational and medical marijuana at the same time. As Americans wait on the results from Nevada, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and North Carolina, Donald Trump went on air to claim that he “won the legal votes and the Democrats won the illegal votes,” but within minutes almost all news stations cut him off and stopped the coverage of his untruthful speech. I feel confident in saying that Joe Biden has won this election, however, the Democrats have already won because voter turnout was at an all-time high, marijuana is being legalized and decriminalized one state at a time, and we remain in the lead of the electoral college.
After 4 dreadful years of Donald Trump, it seems as though the long-awaited peace and happiness is coming our way. Although no election can solve all of our problems, this one will certainly help to rebuild America. We still have a long way to go in society but at least we’ll have a president who doesn’t think it is okay to “grab ’em by the p*ssy.”
